Labels are free-form text that you use to tag pages and attachments to help manage these resources. Labels are used in two primary ways:

  • Search - On the Search results landing page, use labels to filter the results. Note that labels do not boost search result rankings as suggested by this support article for installed Confluence.

  • Organize - Some macros use labels to display and organize content. For example, the Page Properties Report, Task Report, and the Content Label macros.

To create a label, edit the properties for an attachment or click the Add label link at the bottom of a page. Note that labels cannot be defined for content within a page such as headings and tables.

Before creating a new label, make sure it (or a similar label) doesn’t already exist using the Labels List macro. This will prevent a proliferation of labels, which can be difficult to manage.

To remove a label, it must be removed from all resources that use the label including pages that have been deleted (but not purged). Refer to the Use labels to organize pages and attachments support page for details.
